Anybody ever used one? Input, Anybody?
Hi Susan:
I was interested in your comments re the Dell Inspiron 630. Could you please let me know if you upgraded and what you upgraded to, i.e faster processors, memory, etc.? Thanks. Lisa Barrett
Does anyone know if digital signatures will also work with Eclipse? Apparently there is training in Anaheim on using digital signatures with CC, but there is no mention of other CAT softwares. I'm assuming it would, but any info anyone has on whether it will, and how it works would be greatly appreciated!
TIA
Thanks, Wynne! Sorry about getting this message in the middle of your thread! The NCRA publicity says to bring your computer for the digital sig. training, but only if you are on CC....I wondered!
Wynne,
I used one for about 3 years. It was a CF-50 model. It still runs but it's really slow. It only has half a gig of memory and a 40 gig hard drive, so with voice files, I had to get rid of jobs ASAP. It's a solidly built notebook and never really had to use tech support. When I did, I got a person from America that I could understand on the phone promptly, no waiting. Oddly, though, the microphone did not work properly and I had to use a sound card in the PC slot to get the audio sync working. After I did that, it worked great. And the CD player never worked, but I was too busy to send it in, so I used an external DVD recorder. So I worked around any issues and was happy. It had a standard resolution screen, no wide screen, which I liked and it was nice and bright with a matte finish. It truly was a workhorse and never gave out on me. It's just outdated and slow. It takes almost 4 minutes to boot up. I believe in updating notebooks before you have a major problem and the time had come.
Inasmuch as it's also heavy (6.7 lbs.), my next laptop I wanted to be lighter. Plus Toughbooks are overly expensive now considering what you get. I replaced my old T-book with a Dell Latitude D630 and have a screamingly fast machine. It even comes with a serial port and 4 USB's. Love it. Since it is a business notebook, like the T-book, I have great support from American-speaking people that I can understand and it's a lot lighter. I was considering a ThinkPad T61, but after reading negative reviews about the ThinkPad, I bought the Dell and have been so happy with it. It's a great laptop. Think twice about plopping down those bucks for the Panasonic. Read the reviews on the Internet at sites such as CNET, notebookreview.com, etc. to help you decide when you need to replace. Good luck.
Wynne,
A computer is typically a computer and if the specs meet or exceed requirements there should not be a problem; I am sure you will pay some sort of premium for having a military specced computer that can survive being used as a tennis racquet, thrown in the back of a pickup, immersed in water, buried in ice, and blown up by 2 sticks of dynamite, though.
I would hope you don't put your poor system through that kind of abuse!

I'm sure it's generic and would work with any CAT software.
